The Buckhorn

Daily Fee

Comfort, TX

1997

Art Schaupeter’s first solo design, The Buckhorn was opened in 2000 in Comfort, Texas. The Buckhorn is an example of golf creating great value for the players, the client and the community. The design objective from the client was to create a golf course that would be affordable (under $25 to walk at the time) and fun for the golfers, which meant that it also had to be affordable to construct (under $2 million for the complete course itself). The golf holes are laid on the land very softly, with less than 80,000 cubic yards of material moved to create the holes. The golf course also serves the community by using the local effluent water for irrigation. A previously capped landfill located on the site was also incorporated into the layout of the holes without being impacted by the design and construction. The “Texas Hill Country” site has yielded a very nice, relaxing golf course. The holes provide a straightforward, strategic test of golf for the players, and with water only in play on two holes on the core golf course, it’s hard to lose a ball during the round. Playing golf at The Buckhorn is always enjoyable…golf as it should be.
